Caluta background information

The name Caluta is an abbreviation of the scientific name for Little Stint, Calidris minuta. This kind of abbreviation is widely used in Finland, for example when writing up bird observations in the field and entering records or ringings in databases. Normally, the abbreviation consists of three letters from the beginning of both the family and species name, but in the case of Little Stint, the latter three letters are from the end of the species name because of the “collision” of names with Least Sandpiper Calidris minutilla. This kind of shorthand is a very practical way of writing up field notes, and when learned, much better than some other methods for the same usage. Unfortunately, the changing family taxonomy is making many changes in the abbreviations necessary. It has been suggested to start using six letter abbreviations of the Finnish species names, which are supposed to change less in the future, creating a similar system to the one used in the USA
